Learn a skill, raise your value

Posted by chris.dauphin

Before I went to school for communication, I was working in the music business as a musician and music producer. I still work in the music industry regularly, but it is no longer my primary income.

Due to my work in the music industry, one of the skills I learned was to record and edit audio. This single skill has transcended a lot of what I learned in college and professionally because it has become so relevant and essential to know in 2020.

For example, I have been recording, producing, and editing audio for a couple of decades, so creating podcasts with professional results wasn’t intimidating to me. My experience gives me a firm understanding of how to use audio compression, eq, automate, master, and more. When I include this skill with the skills I have as a communications director and marketer, I become much more valuable to my clients and employers.

Gary Vee says the four people every start-up needs is a math person, and art person, a video person, and a writer.

The math person focuses on the metrics of advertising, cost per click, customer acquisition cost, lifetime value (LTV) of a customer, etc.

The art person creates pictures with quotes from video and other content and posts it across social media.

The video person films and handles postproduction on video content for social media.

And the writer writes your copy.

I agree with Gary that every start-up in 2020 needs these four people. But if you can become proficient in just one of these areas, in addition to what you already know, you will stand out among your peers and raise your value significantly.

Ok, that’s all for today. Good luck out there!
